At its core, the diamond trade is a fairly closed circle of exclusive, privately-held organizations. These players all have a major presence in Antwerp, Belgium, otherwise known as the Diamond Buying Capital of the World. Antwerp’s ‘Diamond District’ consists of three square blocks of the world’s most active brokerages, cutters, polishers and grading houses. A whopping 75% of the world's diamond trading happens there. And nestled in between all those cutters and polishers is the Spence buying office. We’ve been developing and strengthening relationships there since 1980. We’ve purchased millions of dollars in diamonds during that time. So these days we’re pretty high up on the list when it comes to seeing the ‘good diamonds’. We get to cherry-pick the stones that are so well-cut they dance and sparkle like a disco ball.

Another reason why Spence diamonds are noticeably better is because diamonds are all we do. You don’t see any colored stones or giftware in our stores. Just diamonds and diamond jewellery. We’ve been staring at diamonds all day, every day for the last thirty years. We think we’ve gotten pretty good at it.

But at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is what you think about our diamonds. That’s why your Spence diamond education includes you looking through a Binocular microscope to judge for yourself just how beautiful they are. You can’t see anything through those loupes other jewellers hand you. And you definitely can’t tell what a diamond looks like online. You have to be able to compare it side by side with other diamonds so you can see whether it’s properly cut, well proportioned and highly polished. Only then will we call it a Spence diamond.

Every jeweller claims to have the best prices, but nobody can ever explain why they have the best prices. It’s pretty straightforward here at Spence. First, we cut out three layers of middlemen. Our buying office in Antwerp buys our diamonds directly; we import and distribute them to Spence stores as needed; and all our rings are manufactured in our Vancouver-based design studio. It’s a business model built on efficiency and quality control. And the fact that we handle these responsibilities in-house instead of paying someone else to do them means we can price our diamonds lower than those competitors with more traditional distribution chains.

Second, Spence doesn’t have millions of dollars tied up in inventory and rent because we don't carry live merchandise and we don’t lease expensive mall space. Our freestanding showrooms are filled with sample ring prototypes. It's not until you've looked through those prototypes and determined exactly what you want that we start building the actual ring.

Furthermore, we buy several tons of diamonds each year. Our suppliers know they can count on us for a consistently high amount of business and they like being paid on time. As a result, they give us sweetheart deals on quality diamonds to keep us coming back.
